The current political situation in Bangkok and present operation status of airport and other port facilities. 2008/09/02
Although it has already been widely reported on the news and in other media, KWE would like to outline the present situation in respect of the above.
(As at 6 a.m. on September 2)
| (1) | PAD (the People's Alliance for Democracy, antigovernment body) has indicated that it will conduct widespread protest activities at 7 airports including Suvarnabhumi Airport as well as forcing the closure of major roads in the southern part of the country. |
| (2) | A strike by the State Railways Union has resulted in the suspension of more than half of all rail services, which is now beginning to influence fuel transport. |
| (3) | A planned antigovernment strike by an association of unions covering 43 state-run corporations on September 3 has been announced. |
| (4) | At Suvarnabhumi Airport, operations at both the passenger and cargo terminals continue as normal. As regards surrounding road traffic conditions, while there is an increased presence of police vehicles and some lane closures for vehicle inspections and police questioning, as this is random in nature and does not apply to all vehicles, only minor traffic delays have been seen even during the evening rush hours and there has been no significant disruption to cargo receiving and shipping. While PAD has threatened to call for a strike at the cargo terminal of Thai Airways, according to the on-site manager, at this time no formal decision on the strike has been made. |
| (5) | In term of port facilities while the overall situation is the same as described in (4) above, it is rumored that dockworkers at the Bangkok Port will participate in the strike planned for September 3 as described in (3) above. |
KWE will keep you updated with the latest information as it comes to hand.
